Canadian Communications Officer

ABOUT FORESTETHICS

Founded in 2000, ForestEthics is a nonprofit environmental organization with staff in Canada and the United States. Our mission is to protect Endangered Forests and wild places, wildlife, and human wellbeing. We catalyze environmental leadership among industry, governments and communities by running hard-hitting and highly effective campaigns that leverage public dialogue and pressure to achieve our goals.  Our current campaigns focus on fighting climate change, protecting wild places in Canada and in California’s Sierra, and on transforming industries that use products that come from these places. Our efforts have helped secure the protection of more than 65 million acres of forest and transformed the environmental practices of Fortune 500 companies including Dell, Staples, Office Depot, Victoria’s Secret, Williams-Sonoma, and many others.

THE POSITION

Develop, coordinate and implement strategic communications plans for ForestEthics Canadian campaigns, including our Tar Sands campaign, climate campaign, Boreal campaign, and B.C. forests campaign. This position will be based out of our Vancouver office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with campaigners to develop communications plans and strategic opportunities that leverage media to achieve victories. Develop and maintain relationships with reporters, television producers and other news decision -makers in the Canada.
  • Develop regional, national and international communication and media strategies, including the development of key messages.
  • Work closely with online communications specialist to create online communications strategies.
  • Coordinate and communicate media strategies as appropriate with US communications staff.
  • Produce written materials including press releases, press advisories, op-eds, letter to the editors, fact sheets, etc.
  • Produce materials ranging from fact sheets to brochures.
  • Identify, brief and train spokespeople.
  • Provide ongoing advice about media aspects of each campaign.
  • Facilitate the needs of media requests including background materials, spokespeople, etc.
  • Write quickly, succinctly, and respond efficiently to breaking news.
  • Coordinate media events such as press conferences.
  • Create and maintain media lists.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years experience working in a media outlet or media department of an NGO.
  • Sound news judgment and solid contacts in both news and feature media.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Interest in or passion for the mission of ForestEthics
  • Proven experience in writing and editing for news and feature media.
  • Experience writing query letters and pitching to feature media outlets.
  • Creativity
  • Basic understanding of social media campaigns and metrics, ability to write online materials a plus.
  • Any design program skills – photoshop, indesign, illustrator, also a plus
  • Ability to handle numerous tasks at one time
  • Ability to travel both domestically as well as to the U.S. – this is not a high-travel job, but some travel may be required.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Knowledge of forest issues and market campaigns
  • Computer proficiency in basic computer applications, including spreadsheet, word processing and database software, contact management systems and the internet
  • Demonstrated track record of collaboration and ability to work independently
  • Ability to think and act strategically
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • High math skills as demonstrated by the ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • High reasoning skills as demonstrated by the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Very high language skills as demonstrated by the ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents; ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community; ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format; ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Paper Campaign Coordinator

THE POSITION

Qualified applicants will provides strategic development, fundraising, campaign staff management, intellectual leadership and focused vision for our paper campaign.  The Paper Campaign Coordinator will serves as the external face/voice of the ForestEthics’ Paper campaign. The position will be based out of one of our hub offices in San Francisco, CA or Bellingham, WA. This is a full-time, exempt position with a competitive salary and excellent benefits.  The position will remain open until filled.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead the strategic direction of the Paper campaign so that it contributes to protection of Canada’s boreal forests.
  • Engage a multi-disciplinary team of advisors and staff in the development of winning campaign strategies that are executed through specific campaign project plans.
  • Provide day-to-day management of the Paper team, motivate and develop staff, identify and manage conflicts effectively where they may arise.
  • Oversee the annual campaign budgets and ensure financial health of the campaign.
  • Oversee all research contracts and retainers.
  • Manage virtual collaboration workspace for campaign.
  • Propose job descriptions for interns.
  • Supervise interns in the performance of their jobs.  
  • Responsible for direct contact to persuade paper companies they must act to protect Canada’s boreal forests.  
  • Work with Market Solutions department to support its work on paper issues with companies.
  • Work with organizing department to coordinate activist and ally involvement in Paper campaign.
  • Work with Communications department on media and materials for Paper campaign.
  • Advise corporate campaigners on Paper issues/Questions.
  • Participate in all campaign planning activities and meetings.
  • Provide regular update on campaign activity.
  • Track web site to ensure information is up-to-date and accurate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3 years experience in campaign project planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of forest issues and corporate campaigns.
  • Computer proficiency in project management software in addition to basic computer applications, including spreadsheet, word processing and database software, contact management systems and the internet.
  • Excellent project management, follow-through, and time management skills.
  • Experience with grant writing and budgeting preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with media relations preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of effective teamwork and coalition building as well as ability to work independently.
  • Ability to think and act strategically.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Director, Climate Program

THE POSITION

ForestEthics is currently seeking an energetic and creative Climate Director to lead our Climate Program in Canada. The successful applicant will oversee a passionate team of campaign, communications and outreach staff working on our Tar Sands and Sacred Headwaters campaigns and Climate Solutions work, with staff in Canada and the US. 

As a key member of the ForestEthics senior management team, you will be part of leading an exciting, results-driven organization with a strong track record. As an inspiring leader, you will develop, implement and administer the Climate Program vision and plan; communicate your work to internal and external audiences; provide leadership and manage staff; and build relationships with industry, businesses, allied organizations, governments and key opinion leaders.
You will develop and implement strategic communication plans with our communications team and act as the programs media spokesperson when required. You will also be a creative participant in the development of fundraising plans, including proposal development, program reports, and updates for external funders.

We are seeking a talented individual who has a demonstrated track record as a change agent.

POSITION SUMMARY

ForestEthics climate campaign focuses on mobilizing public opposition to the Tar Sands to create pressure for reforming Canadian climate and energy policy. In 2010, the campaign will prioritize the Tar Sands, stopping the Gateway pipeline and developing strong national climate policies.  This position will be based in Vancouver, with the consideration for Toronto. 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least eight years of relevant work experience such as environmental campaigning, organizing, politics, advocacy or media, with demonstrated tangible results
  • Working knowledge of climate change and energy issues
  • Post Secondary degree preferred
  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent project management, time management and interpersonal skills
  • Must be extremely well organized, able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, and work independently and as part of a team
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment

Communications Internship

Location: San Francisco

Become a leader in the movement to save Endangered Forests and fight climate change. Through a communications internship with ForestEthics, you can receive valuable training and make a critical impact on successful campaigns targeting the big destroyers of Endangered Forests and big enablers of climate change. We make sure that our interns learn new skills and are exposed to the communications strategy and tactics of our organizations’ projects and campaigns.

ABOUT THIS INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

  • Held in San Francisco
  • Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday – internship hours are flexible within these hours
  • Requires a 3-month commitment with a minimum of 10 hours/week; 20hrs/week for a summer internship
  • We can offer course credits upon completion

Organizing Internship

Location: San Francisco

Through an organizing internship with ForestEthics, you can receive valuable training and make a critical impact on a successful campaign targeting the big destroyers of endangered forests. As an organizing intern your responsibilities will include organizing activists at the local and national levels, training new activists, and helping to distribute campaign materials. Internships are designed to meet the skill set and interests of each individual.

SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Dedication to protecting Endangered Forests through markets campaigns.
  • Demonstrated interest in grassroots organizing.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Good organizational skills.
